What is urethral injection therapy

Many patients consider surgery far too disruptive to their daily lives. They are concerned about hospitalization, long recovery periods and possible complications.

Urethral injection therapy using a bulking agent is an attractive alternative to surgery.

The urethral bulking injection procedure is a minimally invasive out-patient procedure, with no or few side effects as well as minimal recovery time.

Urethral injection therapy is performed under local anesthesia. Using a cystoscope (a sort of telescope), three to four deposits of the Bulkamid® urethral bulking gel are injected in the urethra to help the closing mechanism between urinations.

After Treatment

You will be discharged after the first urination. Normally this will be after few hours.

Possible side effects:

  • Pain during the first urinations.
  • Inflammation of the bladder (rare). This condition is easily treated with antibiotic.

Sick leave:

  • 2 days

After a week you will be able to go back to your daily activities including sports and sex.
